The differences between genuine, remanufactured, and compatible printer cartridges


There are a variety of cartridges available for your printing solutions, and each one comes with its own specifications, benefits or risks. Get to know the difference between genuine, remanufactured, or compatible cartridges below.


  • Genuine" or "OEM" (original equipment manufacturer) cartridges are made by your printer manufacturer and come with your printer.

  • A "remanufactured" cartridge is a genuine cartridge that has been cleaned, rebuilt, and refilled with ink/toner by a different manufacturer.

  • A "compatible" cartridge is a brand new printer cartridge built by a different manufacturer that has never been used before.

Genuine toners typically have the highest page yields. Compatible and remanufactured toners don’t last as long as genuine printers and print far fewer pages. Genuine toners are more durable and able to maintain print quality while printing more pages, unlike compatible or remanufactured toners.

Toner cartridges are a pivotal component of the printing process and directly influence the print quality of a printer. If you want your printer to deliver its highest potential for text and image quality, it is important to use the highest quality toner. When it comes to print quality, genuine toners deliver crisper text, and image quality that is brighter and sharper with more accurate colouring. When using compatible or remanufactured toners, the print quality is often lacking and the colours are often inaccurate.

The problems that can arise with compatible toners are caused by several factors such as variation in electrostatic qualities, melting points, pigments and particle sizes. These factors can and often do result in the toner leaking and damaging the printer. With remanufactured toners, waste toner and paper debris can be left in the cartridge from each print job, which often leads to backgrounding issues and the remanufactured toner becoming contaminated. Genuine toners are manufactured by the manufacturer they are used for and as a result, do not carry the risk of malfunctioning that compatible and remanufactured toners carry.

An important factor of print quality is how long the print lasts over time. Print produced from genuine toners typically maintains its integrity over time and does not fade. Print produced from compatible and remanufactured toners does not have the same longevity and typically fades at a significantly faster rate.

Debunking the myth of lower costs with remanufactured supplies.


When you compare true costs—apples to apples—genuine Toshiba supplies actually cost less than imitation/remanufactured supplies. How can that be? While it’s true that third party supplies can start out priced up to 50% less, this initial price doesn’t reflect your true hard costs.
